Step-by-step instructions for taking an at-home sample.
Important details before you take your blood sample
Taking a blood test from home is relatively simple, but we’ve put together some instructions to prevent errors and ensure the process runs smoothly.

Here's how you do it
Instructions for test kits with 1x Tasso+ device

Lay your kit out on a low table, so you can stand and have your hand below your elbow – gravity helps your blood flow.

Wash your hands with soap and warm water.

On the upper section of your non-dominant arm, rub up and down for 2 minutes, Prepare the shoulder by using the alcohol swab (H) to wipe the contact area. Ensure the shoulder is dry before attaching the Tasso+ device (A).

Remove the Tasso+ device (A) from the tray.

Open the blood collection tube (B) by twisting off the lid.

With fill lines facing out, press the blood collection tube (B) into the Tasso+ device (A) until snug.

Peel tab and clear cover from the red button on the Tasso+ device (A).

Stick the Tasso+ device (A) to the shoulder and press the button until it clicks to start collection.

Allow tube to fill. Remove the Tasso+ device (A) if blood reaches the top fill line before 5 minutes pass.

Remove the Tasso+ device (A) by peeling from one side.

Remove the blood collection tube (B) from the Tasso+ device (A) with a slight twist and pull down. Replace the cap on the blood collection tube (B) by pressing firmly until you hear it click.

Apply pressure to the shoulder with the sterile dry swab (C) to stop the bleeding, wash hands and apply a plaster (D). Gently invert the tube at least 10 times but do not shake.

Place the blood collection tube (B) into the transportation tube (F) and press firmly to close.

Place the transportation tube (F) into the pathoseal bag (E) and seal by removing the metallic silver strip.

Ensure the sample collection details on the next section of the IFU (I) are filled in, URN (K) is attached and the IFU is placed into the return kit box.

Insert the sealed pathoseal bag (E) into
the box provided and place the box (J) into the large UN3373 return envelope (G). Seal the envelope by removing the metallic silver strip.

Return your sample using the pre-paid envelope provided. Samples should be posted in a Royal Mail late collection postbox, or at a post office, before noon on the same day you collect your sample.
Here's how you do it
Instructions for test kits with 4x Lancets

Lay your kit out on a low table, so you can stand and have your hand below your elbow – gravity helps your blood flow.

Open the blood collection tube (B) by twisting off the lid and stand the tube upright into the holder on the clamshell (G).

Wash your hands with soap and warm water.

Soak your non-dominant hand in warm water for 4-5 minutes.

Swing your non-dominant arm around in a circle 10 times, fully extended if possible. Then clench your fist 10 times. This will help stimulate blood flow.

Wipe your chosen finger with the alcohol swab (C) provided. Ensure your finger is completely dry as blood will not form a drop on a moist finger. Your ring finger is usually best for sample collection.

Take a lancet (A) and rotate the protective cover once before carefully removing. Remain standing and place your whole hand on a hard surface with your palm facing up, this is important so the lancet can work properly.

Press the lancet firmly against the side of your fingertip until the lancet releases. Wipe away the first drop of blood with the sterile dry swab (D).

Massage your hand in a downward motion and guide the blood into the tube. Don’t squeeze too hard or too close to where you pricked your finger. You should stop at your knuckle before the tip of your finger.

If it takes more than 2 minutes to fill the tube, re-warm your hand for 4-5 minutes, repeat the exercises, and re-prick a different finger with a new sterile lancet.

Once the tube is filled to the top mark, wipe your finger with the sterile dry swab (D), wash and dry your hands and apply the plaster (E).

Place the cap on the tube and press until you hear a click. Gently rotate the tube at least 10 times but do not shake.

Place the blood collection tube into the clamshell (G) and seal.

Place the clamshell into the pathoseal bag (F) and seal by removing the metallic silver strip.

Ensure the sample collection details on the

Posting your sample
We provide everything you need to post your sample to our lab – including prepaid postage.
ONE
Package your sample
Place your sample in the specimen bag and seal it closed. Do not remove the absorbent pad from the bag. Place the bag in the white collection box.
TWO
Securely seal the box
Take the blue security seal provided and stick it over the dotted lines on the edge of the box, pressing down gently to ensure it's sealed tight.
THREE
Post it in a priority postbox
No need to use any stamps or queue at the post office: simply pop your box in your nearest Royal Mail priority postbox. Find out where yours is on the Royal Mail website.
