When you tune in to Two Pints with Will and Ralf, you never know where the conversation will go, but it’s always somewhere between hilarious chaos and midlife confession. This week’s episode started with the lads swapping travel stories: Ralf’s family trip to France (complete with bad accents and strict meal times) and Will’s grown-up holiday to Universal Studios, where motion sickness and the “Hulk” rollercoaster nearly finished him off.

But the laughs soon gave way to nerves. Because this wasn’t just another episode of midlife banter, this was the day Dr Dave returned with their blood test results.

Facing the fear

“I’ve drunk quite a lot over the years,” Will admitted, half-joking but clearly tense. “Now’s when I find out it’s all caught up with me.”

That anxiety might hit home for those who put off a health check because they’re simply feeling ‘fine’. Men are notorious for avoiding check-ups, often not out of stubbornness, but fear. As Ralf put it, “The reason we don’t go [to the doctor] is because we’re afraid of the results.”

Dr Dave, Numan’s men’s health expert, was back to prove that knowledge doesn’t need to be scary, but is the key to staying well. “You’re both going to be absolutely fine,” he reassured them, reminding them that this isn’t about bad news, but about seeing where you’re at and what you can do next.

What the blood tests revealed

The lads had a comprehensive blood test checking testosterone, cholesterol, blood sugar, kidney, and liver function. Ralf’s results were all in ‘normal’ ranges. His testosterone levels were healthy, sugar and cholesterol within range. “Slightly sickeningly good,” Will admitted.

Will’s results, however, were not quite bad news, but a wake-up call. His testosterone was fine, but cholesterol and triglycerides were slightly raised, along with mild signs of liver strain.

“Your cholesterol is a bit higher than we’d like. Your triglycerides are a little up, too,” Dr Dave explained. “It’s nothing dangerous, but it’s your body’s way of saying: maybe ease off the alcohol a little.”

Will took it on the chin and summed up the message behind blood testing perfectly: “It’s what you can’t see that frightens you,” he said. “If someone tells you something’s a bit high, it’s like, right, time to make a change.”

That’s exactly the point of blood testing and having regular check-ups. Will and Ralf haven’t had terrifying news, they’ve just received knowledge that helps them make better decisions. It’s about catching small things before they become big ones.

The liver doesn’t lie

When Will asked if his results meant he was “drinking too much,” Dr Dave was direct but reassuring. “There’s an indication, yes. Your liver’s just crying out a little bit. But the liver’s an amazing organ as it reflects your lifestyle quickly. Small changes make a big difference.”

That’s the beauty of testing. No guessing, no catastrophising,  just facts, context, and a clear next step.

Knowledge is power

As the lads joked their way through the rest of the segment, something more serious stuck. “We don’t want to know things because we’re scared,” Will said earlier in the episode. “But knowledge is power.”

That’s exactly what the test proved. Neither of them walked away with doom and gloom, they walked away with understanding. And that’s the point Dr Dave kept driving home. “This is how you dodge the bullets of middle age like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes - by getting checked early and making small changes before it’s too late.”

The numan take

Men tend to wait until something goes wrong before they act. But, as Will and Ralf learned, it doesn’t have to be that way. A simple blood test can show what’s happening  before symptoms ever appear.

Dr Dave summed it up best:

“A blood test isn’t about fear, it’s about knowledge. Once you know what’s going on, you can do something about it.”
